Falun Gong practitioners in China have once again turned the tables on one of the Chinese leader's most potent weapons for spreading propaganda about Falun Gong -- state-run television.
With festering scars on her body and severe edema in her abdomen, Ms. Lingxia Wu was released from a Chinese detention center where she had been held and severely tortured for the past year. She died three weeks later from her injuries. Ms. Wu was 37 years old.
Widely viewed as a test case for the "One Country, Two Systems" in Hong Kong, the trial (photos and timeline) of 16 Falun Gong practitioners is expected to conclude this week. Final submissions by the prosecution and defense are scheduled for Tuesday, August 6, Hong Kong time.
A 25 year old Falun Gong woman died in police custody on October 11, bringing the number of confirmed deaths to 300 in Jiang Zemin’s crusade to eradicate the peaceful spiritual practice. However, sources inside the Chinese Government are saying the death toll is well over 1,000.
With details of the deaths of six additional Falun Gong practitioners recently verified, the total toll with individual details has reached 278. But government sources inside China say that the actual toll in the intensifying campaign against peaceful Chinese citizens exceeds 1,000.
Sources say that over ten male practitioners of Falun Gong were beaten to death at Changlinzi Labor Camp in northeast China.
Mr. Zhang Shengfan, a disabled resident of Shuangcheng City, Heilongjiang Province, died in police custody on June 12th, just a few days after police dragged him from his home. Sources say Mr. Zhang, a Falun Gong practitioner, had been beaten to death. He was 38 years old.
